Virginia Tech Alumni
Association
As a result of a lot of hard
work by a relatively small number of Middle Tennessee alumni, the chapter was
able to have a very successful year.
Here is a quick overview of how we did versus some of our goals:
1.
We worked on increasing
alumni participation with mixed results.
Although we brought a few new people in to participate, it was not as
many as I had hoped.
2.
We tried to increase
participation in board meetings the some success.
3.
We continued to offer
two $1000 scholarships.
4.
Worked on our endowment
fund with some success.
5.
We continued to
increase our support of the new alumni center.
6.
We continued getting
more board members to attend the officer’s forum.
7.
We raised $100 for the
Rayna DuBose Medical Fund Donation.
8.
We continued giving
turkeys to the Nashville Rescue Mission for our “Hokies for Hunger” project.
9.
We collected pop-tops
for the Nashville Ronald McDonald House.
10.
Our chapter had
representatives at very Virginia Tech home game.
11.
Working on improving
communications has been a top priority this year. I continued to send out the President’s Corner on e-mail
informing the alumni of chapter activities and upcoming events.
12.
We also created a
chapter website to aid in communications, vtechalumni.com, has been an
excellent success.
13.
We helped Patty Foutz
with attending the Virginia Tech Traditions, a new alumni project.
14.
We wrote a chapter
fund-raising letter to local alumni to aid in creating a constant avenue of
financial support of the chapter’s mission.
15.
We supported our troops
in Iraq with “Hokies for the 101st Airborne” project, which we sent
care packages, buttons, four leap clovers, and bomb decals for 265 local Fort
Campbell troops.
16.
We adopted a wild
turkey at the Nashville zoo named the “Nashville Hokie Bird”.
17.
We hosted an awards
dinner to thank the chapter’s outstanding members for a wonderful year.
18.
Our raffles and
auctions were very successful this year and contributed to our budget.
19.
This years’ Hokie Golf
Scramble was the most successful yet. It continues to grow.
20.
The continuance of our
“Evening featuring Virginia Tech” was very successful in educating local
students about Virginia Tech.
21.
We continued to help
Paul Carney, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions with three college
fairs in the area.
22.
The care packages to
our incoming freshmen for their first exams went over very well.
23.
Our alumni and family
picnic went over very well. We had Lindsay Raymond, Director of Development for
the College of Architecture in attendance.
24.
We continued with our
football watching parties at Beethoven’s.
Those were very successful and brought out quite a few Hokies that had
not been involved before.
Overall, I think this
chapter had a very successful year, with new opportunities for civic
involvement as well as a lot of fun. I
have been honored to serve as President this past year and I forward to our
chapter having an even more successful year in 2003-2004.
Go Hokies!!!
